Subject Previews

At Victory College we offer a balanced choice of subjects; you can preview some of them here, for a complete and detailed list please contact the College for a Prospectus.

Japanese

The new language centre will provide Japanese classes initially from prep-year 4 with full language to be offered to all years' students by 2014.

Media Studies

A new subject introduced this year media studies, is designed to introduce students to the world of staging, lighting, audio visual techniques, events and more. This subject will link in with the primary and senior drama productions with students taking this subject responsible for this real life project as part of their practical studies.

Physical Education

Specialist lessons each week are designed to meet physical needs at age levels. The subject offers a wide variety of sports.
 
Year Prep-4 One 40minute lesson per week
Year 5-6 Two 40minute lessons per week
Year 7-10 Four 40minute lessons per week
Year 11-12 OP Physical Education
Year 11-12 Sport Education for Vocational Students

Baseball

In years Prep-Year 4 lessons concentrate on development of individual physical skills.
Years 5-10 there is a strong concentration on team and fitness skills with each lesson structured to have a practical component.
The senior elective subjects cover in depth studies in

Modern History

Offered over 2 years in 11 and 12 the subject provides a cyclical work programme covering in depth inquiry topics in the history of ideas and beliefs, studies of power, studies of conflict and studies of hope. The aim is to develop extensive skills in research, analysis, synthesis of information to achieve/arrive at a comprehensive hypothesis.

In years 9 and 10 the focus of the music programme is to develop students listening, performance, compositional and theoretical skills. Students are introduced to a variety of musical genre. Assessment includes written, aural and practical progress and performance.
 

Manual Arts

Manual Arts is offered in years 7-12 students develop skills in woodwork to a high level within a supportive teaching environment.

In a workshop environment students are encouraged to experiment as new skills are learnt and to apply these to make items of their own choice.

Students are given the opportunity to enter in local shows and competitions. Victory College has an established reputation for winning many awards.

Manual Arts Studio

All items produced by the students in manual arts are taken home to keep.

 

Computer Studies / Technology Studies

All students in years 7-10 are given exposure to basic elements of word processing, spread sheeting and desktop publishing using Microsoft Office suite of programs.

Emphasis at this stage is on practical skills that will assist students in other subject areas and preparation of assignments.

Year 11 and 12 students are able to choose to complete a board registered school subject, Technology Studies.

Technology Studies is based on product design and production. The students develop appropriate solutions to problems through the design process. They learn skills such as physical modelling, CAD design, and designing for sustainability. This offers students an exciting introduction to the careers of graphic design, architecture and industrial design.

Students are taught a variety of media areas such as

  • digital art/design.

Within these media areas an assortment of subject matter and techniques are explored.

The College supports the ethos of the Queensland Studies Authority and the syllabus is aligned accordingly with the specific arts outcomes and standards relative to the appropriate grades.

Home Economics

Home Economics at Victory College is offered to students in Years 7-12 and is broken into four core modules across these years.

Year 7-8

Home Economics is taught in semester 1 for year 7 and semester 2 for year 8.

Modules studied

  • Working in the kitchen - students learn about safety and hygiene practices in the kitchen while learning a variety of skills and making a range of foods.
  • Simply sewing - learning the basics of sewing with a machine while creatively designing an apron.
  • You are what you eat - investigating health practices for daily meals.
  • Textile construction – creative design of a cushion cover, learn about fibres.

Year 9-10

Home economics is taught for a full year.

Modules include

  • Meals for the family - looking at various needs for family members.
  • Food for teenagers - focusing food suitable for the teenage lifestyle and growing bodies.
  • Design and construction of clothing - design and produce an article of clothing.
  • Food for entertaining - creating suitable food for a variety of occasions.
  • International food - East meets West - understanding some of the foods from a variety of Asian and Pacific cultures.
  • Design and construction of a product - investigating textures, fabrics and fibres.
  • Interior design – textile principles of design and construction of a product for interior decorating.
  • Marketing – ways of marketing products to the consumer.

Year 11-12

Home economics is taught at the OP level.

There are three core areas 1) Food Studies 2) Living Environment and 3) Textile Studies.

Modules include

  • Consumer Textiles.
  • The Health of Individuals and Society.
  • Food and the Australian Identity.
  • Contemporary Issues in Food and Nutrition for Adolescents.
  • Design for Fashion.
  • Individuals and Families in their Living Environment .
